Lichen Wang, 21, has won his court battle after being fired for being too young and having Asperger’s.
Wang began working at New World Market (NWM) in December 2014 as a Warehouse Worker. Initially he started on a two-week trial, working six days a week for $90 (£42.72) a day, according to a just-released ruling by New Zealand’s Employment Relations Authority (ERA).
A week into employment Wang was informed that he wasn’t suitable for the role but, after discussions, was given a reprieve to "improve his work efficiency.”
A month into his time at the firm his mobile phone, wallet and car keys were stolen from the company kitchen. Due to his distress over this he was told to take a couple of days off. Upon returning he was informed that his employment was terminated and that someone in their 40s was better suited to the role.
