A FedEx worker based in Tennessee, USA, fell asleep on one of his company’s planes at Memphis International Airport and woke up mid-flight to Texas.
The unnamed man was exhausted after working two jobs, and fell asleep unnoticed by co-workers. He was subsequently locked into the plane, which took flight.
The member of staff was obviously tired, and should not have been allowed to work. One could argue that he fell victim to presenteeism; speaking at last year’s CIPD annual conference, Sir Cary Cooper spoke about the pitfalls of this: "Employees who turn up to work ill or disengaged cost businesses twice as much in lost productivity than employees who are absent.
"There isn't a study in the world that proves working longer hours makes you more productive. But there are studies that show longer hours will damage your health."
