McDonald's scrap zero-hour contracts

McDonald’s workers on highly contentious zero-hours contracts will be offered the chance to move to fixed hours, in a landmark move by the fast food giant.

The chain is one of the biggest users of the contracts in the country, with an estimated 80,000 workers on zero hours, which critics claim exploit workers – The Guardian reports.

McDonald’s UK boss Paul Pomroy, said the company was revamping its employment policy after staff told him they were struggling to get loans, mortgages and mobile phone contracts because they are not guaranteed employment each week.

As a result, the company has started offering staff the option of moving to contracts guaranteeing a minimum of four hours a week, 16 hours or 30 hours.
