The CEO of Tata Steel's European Operations, Karl Koehler, joined thousands of employees calling for help for the industry’s dangerous situation.
The steelworkers are protesting against the European Union opening up markets to China, which they claim would destroy their sector completely. According to the Independent, European steelmaking is in decline, with executives saying that only “stronger trade barriers could help them stay in the game against a flood of cheap Chinese imports.”
Koehler stood alongside his worried employees in a show of leadership and comradery, accusing Beijing of undercutting European steel manufacturers, and by extension discounting global efforts which aim to decrease carbon emissions in the long-term.
The CEO commented: “The situation facing Tata Steel and other European steelmakers is perilous.
