Why workers turn into zombies when commuting

Nine out of ten workers have admitted that they commute to work in a zombie-like state, according to a new survey from Quaker Oats.

The cereal company polled 2,000 people. 60% of them couldn’t remember their journey, while 54% confessed that they remained in their 'zombie state' even once they got to their desks.

The study revealed that most workers set their alarm at 6.30am, but that they don’t feel awake until 9.40am.

Linda Papadopoulos, Psychologist at the University of York in Canada, told the Evening Standard why this is: “The way our central nervous system functions allows us to be conscious of some things, but others go into autopilot.”
