Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet reshuffle has posed questions on how dissent in the Boardroom, and in the workplace generally, should be handled.
Yesterday Pat McFadden, MP for Wolverhampton South East and former Shadow Minister for Europe, was sacked over issues around loyalty, specifically a question he asked PM David Cameron in the House of Commons after the Paris Attacks. McFadden’s full quote can be seen at the bottom of the article.
Speaking to Radio 4’s Today programme, John McDonnell, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer and MP for Hayes and Harlington, explained why McFadden was dismissed: “What [McFadden has] done on a number of occasions is unfortunately distorted Jeremy’s views and turned that into almost a personalised undermining of Jeremy. To be frank, if you want to do that, go to the backbenches and express your views.
“[McFadden’s Commons question about terrorism] played into an agenda that was distorting Jeremy’s views on the issue of how we tackle terrorism ... All the media interpreted that as an attack on Jeremy Corbyn. When Pat says something like that, he’s been a politician, he’s been around a long while, he knows the way that will be interpreted.”
