Supermarket employees who caught a thief stealing tins from the shop floor decided against calling the police, instead, the staff members brought him inside for a Christmas dinner.
Tesco staff in Burngreave, Sheffield, gave the former solider tea, roast turkey and cake, even providing him with new clothes, and listened to how he had come to end up living on the streets. After hearing his story, the Mirror reports that the workers were so moved that they took to the city centre to hand out hot drinks and food to the town’s growing population of rough sleepers.
Rachel Liszka, the local stores Community Champion, explained the growing concern for discharged army veterans who now resort to living on the streets. She told the Mirror: “We have recently noticed the rise in homeless people in Sheffield and decided it is time to help.
“We had a homeless veteran come into our shop who was caught shoplifting because he was hungry. My colleagues got him a tea and cake and I fetched him a roast turkey dinner from our cafe. He was so grateful he cried.
