A part-time employee was told ten weeks into his new role that he was actually doing an unpaid internship, The Canterbury Times reports.
15-year-old Jay El-Leboudy was initially offered a one week trial for the Londis store.
El-Leboudy's Mum had arranged the initial one week trial, but, when Jay had not been paid ten weeks later, he was informed that he was a volunteer.
The incident highlights the imperative need for written contracts and a proper recruitment process, regardless of age or post. The fact that there was confusion on behalf of the new starter regarding his role also displays poor onboarding procedures. If he was placed by a consultant, it would be up to them to ensure the new hire felt they were adequately onboarded.
