How to guarantee a long-term hire

Not only must recruiters ensure that they hire the right person for the job, but that successful candidates becomes long-term members of staff, according to experts.

“Every business leader will agree that is just as important to retain staff as it is to recruit them,” Andy Sumner, Managing Director UK and Ireland at Monster, tells Executive Grapevine. “It is really hard to find employees and once you’ve found them, even the good ones will take five to six months before they become really productive.”

Therefore, hiring professionals need to ensure that successful candidates stay with the company.

Ilhan Hartigan, European Resourcing Partner at Sports Direct, suggests that the first step to do that is to ensure that recruiters know what candidates are looking for. He tells Executive Grapevine: “It’s also sensible to accept that not all candidates are looking for the next move to be the last one: many candidates look for a platform where they can expand on their skill set, developing existing skills and, where we are concerned, gaining exposure in a larger business.”
