Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg donates 99% of shares to charity

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will be giving £30billion (99% of his shares) to charity following the birth of his daughter, in an altruistic gesture of both personal and corporate social responsibility.

This isn’t the first time someone in a senior position in Facebook has gifted money to causes that are close to them. Dustin Moskovitz, a Co-Founder of the tech giant, has previously said he and his wife, Cari Black, will be donating £5.4billion too.  

It can only be hoped that other CEOs will follow in Zuckerberg’s footsteps. Joel Fleishman, Professor of Law and Public Policy Sciences at Duke University agrees. Speaking to The Guardian, he said: “It does exemplify the spirit of the times.

“I celebrate his decision to do it as I celebrate Warren Buffett’s decision to give all that money to the Gates Foundation. People who’ve made all that money are by nature competitive; someone that young giving away that much money will undoubtedly stimulate others to do likewise.”
