What did you want to be when you were little? An astronaut or a cowboy? Well, according to a new report, this generation of children want most to grow up to be a professional athlete.
The annual Fatherly Imagination Report asks 500 kids aged 1-10 what they most aspire to be when they are older, with the most popular responses ranging from teacher to firefighter to scientist. Isaac Simon, Co- Founder of Fatherly, explained in an interview with Mashable what the results of the report mean for the next generation of job hunters. He said: “For me personally, as a dad, the study underlined the fact that if I want my daughter to grow up to be whatever and whoever she wants to be- it’s all about exposing her to as much as possible - and this also means being deliberate about the toys, games and media we bring into our home.”
The majority of girls aspired to go into medicine, teaching and science, whilst boys wanted to be sportsmen, astronauts and engineers. In fact, girls actually chose more STEM careers than boys, at 41% compared to just 32%.
“While we were pleased to see more girls than ever before choosing professions such as doctor and scientist, it was surprising how little overlap there was between genders," claimed Simon. “While professional athlete was the top career choice for boys, almost no girls chose this route and vice-verse for teachers.
