Autistic employee works for one year without wages

A disabled man worked for a large restaurant chain for over a year without taking home any pay.

After an investigation by local news channel WPRI, it was revealed that Caleb Dyl of Middletown Rhode Island had been working at an Applebee’s restaurant for free.

The investigation uncovered that Dyl, who suffers from acute autism, worked three days a week for the chain from July 2014 to August 2015 without ever taking home one pay cheque.

Dyl was placed in the role by as part of a training programme ran by local NGO Resources for Human Development (RHD), aimed at helping young disabled people find work. Though the position was unpaid at the start of the scheme, the proviso was that Dyl would be paid wages when his trial period was over.
