Employee fired for bringing iPad to work

An employee at a fast food restaurant in New Zealand was fired for bringing her iPad into work.

However, her manager was not concerned that the device was a distraction, but rather he worried that she would use it to take photos of his secret recipes.

Christina Jemmett was employed part-time at a takeaway bar in Waikari in 2014, where her former manager Robin Saunders praised her as “one of his best workers”. But when Jemmett began bringing her iPad into work, the relationship broke down, with Saunders accusing his employee of trying to take pictures of his secret recipes.

Jemmett called in sick to work the following day, claiming she was uncomfortable with the situation which led to further confrontations and her eventual dismissal. Since then, Jemmett has taken her case to the Employment Relations Authority (ERA).
