New mothers made to take pay cut when returning to work

Women who take their maternity leave may have to retrain or take another job in a different sector, according to a new study by Workingmums.co.uk.

The report, which interviewed over 2,300 mothers, found that after returning to the workplace many struggled to find a relevant role again. One fifth of working women taking a career break to have children return to a job at lower level, according to the report. Almost a third had to undergo some form of training to help them find work.

However, the research also went on to note that the situation has improved in the last year after an increased focus on women returning to work.

Gillian Nissim, Founder of Workingmums.co.uk, explained the results of the report, saying: “Many mums struggle to get back to work after taking a career break which means retention is a win-win for both mums and employers.
