In an industry that values self-improvement and wellbeing, it is vital that these principles are mirrored by organisations operating in it.
Speaking to Executive Grapevine, Richard Millman, CEO of Total Fitness, swears by a value-based recruitment strategy. He believes it is imperative that all hires are aligned to the company: “People stay [at our gyms] for the people, so the first thing we do is make sure we are recruiting candidates with the right values and behaviours.
“After we’ve made sure they align, we can then assess their technical suitability for the position.”
He is also realistic about retention in his industry: “We have a lot of young staff in the business, and being under the impression that we can retain these people for life - or retain them for an extended period of time - doesn’t really work. It’s wrong for us and them.
