Airline HR departments under-qualified to assess pilots

There is an endemic skills shortage in the airline industry, according to a report by AeroProfessional.

The consultancy specialising in people solutions conducted a survey, revealing that airlines are opting for more experienced candidates.

However, with the growing number of pilots set to retire, the gap in expertise is increasing. Despite recruitment methods staying the same, the report shows that adverts on company websites are still the most preferred option.

The results showed that fewer airlines are engaging with specialist recruiters despite the gap. In contrast to other industries such as finance and marketing, the airline industry is not seeking external expertise. According to a report by CIPD, a lot of industries are creating closer ties with recruitment consultancies and are attempting to combine their in-house with outsourced expertise.
