A minister in the newly formed Greek government has resigned just 48 hours after his election due to a series of homophobic and racist tweets.
Dimitris Kammenos of the Independent Greeks Party was awarded the role of Deputy Transport Minister, after his party was made junior coalition partner with the far-left Syriza party. However, it soon came to light that Kammenos harboured some rather unsavoury views on gay rights and the Jewish population.
In a collection of posts on Twitter, which have since been deleted, the Minister talked about a theory which explained how no Jewish people were in the Twin Towers during the 9-11 attack. Kammenos also mocked the Athenian Gay Pride events.
Following an onslaught of media and public outcry, Kammenos was forced to resign, claiming that he was doing so to allow the government to “function in an orderly way.” The disgraced minister also released a statement explained how he does not hold any anti-Semitic or homophobic views and that his account was hacked by online trolls.
