80% of employees won't work harder for bonus

Four out of five employees wouldn’t make any effort in order to get a bonus, according to new research.

The report, by One4all Rewards, has found that when it comes to bonuses the majority of staff don’t find them motivating or incentivising. A shocking 78% of workers admitted that they would not work harder for a prize worth 10% of their annual salary. What’s more raising the value of the bonus doesn’t have much of an effect either.

The study interviewed 1,000 employees asking questions on what motivates and stimulates them in the workplace. A paltry 50% of employee said they would work harder more a bonus worth 25% of their wage, and a 10% pay rise only results in 22% of staff being more productive.

Declan Byrne, UK Managing Director of One4all Rewards, explained the startling results, commenting: “From this research, it’s clear to see that while bonus culture is impactful, it isn’t always an effective driver of increased output or motivation for many employees. As it can be very expensive for businesses, this is an important learning for many UK employers to acknowledge.”
