Sienna Miller rejects role after being offered 50% less pay than male lead

Hollywood star Sienna Miller has turned down a role on Broadway after learning that she would be paid less than half her male co-star.

Miller, who omitted to name the actor or the play, was due to tread the boards next year in New York. However, when the actress was told of the gender split in earnings, she refused the part.  During an interview with Vogue, Miller explained: “It was a play with just two of us on stage and I was offered less than half of what he was going to be paid. If it was two men, it wouldn't probably happen. Sad, but I walked away."

And though Miller is referring to a theatre role rather than a movie part, she is just one of many actresses now attacking inequality in Hollywood. During the Sony hacking scandal in 2014, it was revealed that American Hustle stars Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence were being paid much less than their male counterparts for the blockbuster.

Similarly Charlize Theron has spoken out about unfair pay in the upcoming movie The Huntsman, in which she insinuated that female actresses were subject to unequal wages. Theron told Elle magazine: “When I thought about the temperature out there – with finding out what Jennifer and Amy were being paid on a set with guy actors who are their counterparts.
