Qatari firm sacks North Korean workforce for 'moonlighting'

A Qatari construction firm has sacked its whole North Korean workforce for violating company rules.

A diplomatic source in Doha, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Voice of America (VOA) that the country’s Construction Development Company (CDC) has fired 108 North Korean workers.

The source said that CDC decided to dismiss the workers after learning they had been working for another construction at night. The Qatari firm, which builds luxury hotels and government facilities, also suspected that supervisors had been confiscating employees’ wages.

Yi Jongsol, a South Korean businessman who operates a construction company in the area, said supervisors essentially smuggled staff to the other site at night and forced them to work.
