A pizza joint in Toronto has retracted a job ad after it triggered furious debate online.
The requirement for the ad said it was seeking applicants with “no audible accent.”
Sean Tanha, the co-owner of FBI pizza said it wasn’t intended to be discriminatory and was simply to prevent confusion with telephone orders. It was “based on our past experiences with employees not being able to clarify the spelling of an address” as “it can become a very big problem.”
However, according to a tweet by the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC), the “big problem” could be with the restaurant’s ad. They said it could act as a human rights violation, and the OHRC Code “can be infringed when someone is denied employment, service, housing, or is otherwise discriminated against because of an accent…”
