Hubspot fires longtime CMO in book scandal

Hubspot has fired its Chief Marketing Officer, Mike Volpe, for reportedly violating the company's code of business conduct and ethics “in connection with attempts to procure a draft manuscript of a book involving the Company.”

The book in question, “Disrupted: My Misadventure in the Startup Bubble”, is a detailed memoir written by Dan Lyons and focused on his time working at HubSpot. According to media site BostInno, a source from within Hubspot has confirmed that Joe Chernov, the company’s Vice President of Content, resigned just days before Volpe was fired over issues surrounding the controversial book.

The source explained: "It was widely believed among the HubSpot team that Dan had an agenda against Mike and Chernov. Dan was hired before a role was determined, and that never worked out, so Mike let him go.

“Chernov was hired later and managed Dan briefly, who told everyone he really liked Joe. But once he was let go, Dan started to say some nasty things behind their backs, including how he wanted to come at them in his book.”
