GM CEO: HR role was most important in my career

Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors (GM) believes that her role in HR was vital to her landing her current position.

In a LinkedIn post she explains how she progressed throughout her career with the help of mentors. 

Before becoming CEO, Barra held several engineering positions and was later offered the role as Vice President of Global Human Resources.

Knowing the importance of the role, Barra was hesistant that it didn’t fit her engineering credentials. However, her mentors provided her with valuable and insightful feedback. They pointed out that she possessed “two very important attributes [for] the job – identifying talent and using teams to confront challenges.”
