In July 2013, Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) launched a national campaign with David Cameron, entitled Disability Confident. The initiative aims to improve employment opportunities for disabled people, whilst removing the barriers that prevent them from gaining employment.
Two years on, Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith commented: “The success of the campaign is clear to see and I want to thank the businesses which have responded so enthusiastically.
“I want everyone to have the chance to benefit from the independence and security of a pay packet. By continuing our efforts, we can give more disabled people that opportunity enabling them to lead full and independent lives and fulfil their career ambitions.”
Speaking to HR Grapevine, Janice Henson, Managing Director of de Poel Community, a temporary labour procurer, discussed the impact the scheme has had on the recruitment process and HR departments. She explained how employers can assess employability during the recruitment process. “We have found recruitment methods such as interviews, online testing and assessment centres can often overlook a superb talent pool of candidates who may not necessarily excel in a standard recruitment process.
