Pro wrestling organisation considers introduction of gay characters

WWE, a brand long associated with machoism, may be broadening its horizons and including LGBT storylines and characters.

Speaking to The Daily Beast, Stephanie McMahon, WWE’s Chief Brand Officer, said: “Darren Young was the first WWE superstar to really come out as being homosexual, but his character in the show is not. At least, we haven’t done anything with it either way—just yet.”

Darren Young came out publicly in August 2013. He was asked by TMZ at Los Angeles International Airport if a gay wrestler could succeed in WWE.

He replied: "Absolutely. Look at me. I'm a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I'll tell you right now, I'm gay. And I'm happy. I'm very happy."
