US Army aim to lift transgender ban

The United States Government is set to announce their plans to lift the ban on transgender individuals enlisting in the military.

The news is expected at the end of this week, giving the Pentagon six months to assess the impact the change would have on the armed forced. Ash Carter, US Defence Secretary, has commissioned a group of military personnel to take an objective look at the issue.

In a statement to Associated Press, Carter said:  “We must ensure that everyone who’s able and willing to serve has the full and equal opportunity to do so. And we must treat all of our people with the dignity and respect they deserve.

“Going forward the Department of Defence must and will continue to improve how we do both.”
