Microsoft to cut nearly 8,000 jobs

Microsoft has announced plans to restructure the company’s phone business, with staff reductions of up to 7,800.

CEO Satya Nadella outlined the job cuts in an email to staff: “We are moving from a strategy to grow a standalone phone business to a strategy to grow and create a vibrant Windows ecosystem including our first-party device family.”

“In the near-term, we’ll run a more effective and focused phone portfolio while retaining capability for long-term reinvention in mobility.”

The move will particularly affect Salo, Finland, where 2,300 jobs will be lost.
