The billionaire boss of luxury jewellery company Cartier has revealed his greatest fear – an uprising of the poor after robots cause mass unemployment.
Speaking at the Financial Times Business of Luxury Summit in Monaco, Johann Rupert, Chairman of Richemont which owns Cartier and several other luxury brands, warned that fear of this uprising would stop the middle classes from spending on luxury goods.
According to Bloomberg, he said: “We cannot have 0.1 percent of 0.1 percent taking all the spoils. It’s unfair and it is not sustainable.”
Rupert, who is worth an estimated $7.5billion continued: “How is society going to cope with structural unemployment and the envy, hatred and the social warfare?”
