
Former Manchester United striker Eric Cantona is suing New York Cosmos for over £640,000 in unpaid wages following his dismissal last year for punching a photographer at a London pub. He was subsequently arrested and cautioned.
Cantona was the club’s director of soccer in 2011, while they tried to secure an MLS franchise. The Frenchman claims the former ‘glamour team’ – who famously signed Brazilian striker Pele and West German defender Franz Beckenbauer in the 1970s - did not pay him his £617,909 salary. A lawsuit for monies owed plus four per cent equity interest was filed at Manhattan federal court.
Shortly after the incident, Cantona said this to RL Radio: “I had a fight with a paparazzi whom I considered too intrusive. I spent three, four hours at the police station and I returned to Paris as planned. So they were bothering me, but I’m used to that.”
