Nearly two-thirds of employees believe they will work past 65

A survey has revealed that more than three in five UK employees expect to work past the traditional retirement age, with more than one in five saying they are certain to stay in work as they get older.

The current number (61%) is down from 66% last year, but still remains much higher than the 35% who assumed they would work past retirement age in 2012, the year after compulsory retirement was removed. Only 12% said they would not work past 65.

Paul Avis, Marketing Director of Canada Life Group, who carried out the survey, said “Retiring at the age of 65 is no longer a given, with a majority of employees expecting to work beyond this point be it for financial reasons or enjoyment.”
