How to ask for a pay rise

It can be that awkward, uncomfortable discussion that sends many into a cold sweat – how to ask for a raise.

Research from Columbia Business School found that it can be more beneficial to ask for a salary raise within a certain range, instead of a set figure - for example asking for £100,000 to £120,000, as opposed to a £100,000 salary.

Co-authors, Daniel Ames and Malia Mason said that a series of experiments found that higher ranges often led to higher salaries for those making an offer, without damaging working relationships.
