5 Top Tips for conveying your vision as a leader

Whether you’re running for PM or for a promotion at work, here are 5 Top Tips for conveying your vision as a leader.

Great leaders know the value and power of their words. They know that sharing a  well-honed vision can change a person, a team, and ultimately an organisation.

When we define our vision and communicate it effectively, people see the big picture and how they can contribute to it.

Take the General Election in May. According to the Guardian this week, the Tories are edging upwards in the polls and are now virtually tied with Labour but David Cameron still doesn’t have the numbers to stay at No 10.

So with this in mind, Cameron and the other leaders will all be addressing issues which affect us all - , healthcare, education, tax, the economy, pensions and the environment, to name a few.

So just as we will vote for our PM in the May Election, the same principles apply for how we choose our leaders in the workplace. People want to work for more than a salary – to be part of something larger than themselves – something to be proud of, that they’ll fight for and that they trust.

Here are 5 Top Tips for conveying your vision as a leader:-

1. Own it

Winston Churchill once said, “Before you can inspire with emotion, you must be swamped with it yourself. Before you can move their tears your own must flow. To convince them, you must yourself believe.” Your passion and conviction will be far more compelling that your words. The first person who should be excited about your vision is YOU!

2. Speak to their goals

Many leaders attempt to share their vision and connect it to their team’s motivation as an afterthought. Instead, spend more time learning about the goals and aspirations of your people and connect the vision of the organisation to THEIR goals.

3. Keep it simple

People are not usually motivated by complicated theories and abstract ideas. The best communicators take the complex and make it simple.

Great leaders use terms and explanations that are easy to understand so everyone can catch their vision – and be able to explain it to others.

4. Include clear actions

One defining characteristic of good leaders is that they know where they are going and have a plan to get themselves and their people there.

Although thoughts and ideas are important, you must give people something to do if they are going to take ownership of the vision and have more than just a passing interest in it. So what is the first step – the one thing that your team can do NOW in order to move the organisation towards your goals, and how can you clear a path for them to get started?

5.
Model commitment

Your team are watching your every move – what you say and more importantly, what you actually do. They want to see just how personally committed you are to this big new idea. Never forget that they will quickly spot inconsistencies in your language and behaviour if you aren’t fully dedicated. So be vigilant and hold yourself accountable to a high standard.
