Top surgeon's shock advice: 'comply with sexual harassment to advance career'

A top female surgeon has shocked trainee doctors after recommending they comply with requests for sex to protect their career advancement.

“If you are approached for sex, probably the safest thing to do in terms of your career is to comply with the request”. That’s the advice from a senior surgeon to her trainee female doctors.

Speaking at an event to launch her book, Pathways to Gender Equality, Sydney-based vascular surgeon Dr Gabrielle McMullin said in an ABC radio interview that “complying with requests” for sex protects their climb up the professional ladder.
