Thousands of Tesco's Head Office jobs to be axed

Tesco's new Chief Executive, Dave Lewis, has announced cost cuts in an effort to revive the UK's biggest retailer.

Sky News has revealed that Lewis' plans involve thousands of job losses at Tesco's Head Office which currently employs around 8000 people. In the past few days insiders have revealed that around 120 business unit leavers have begun to inform hundreds of directors across the Cheshunt and Welwyn Garden City offices, with further discussions to continue.

People to be affected include senior employees at commercial and category director levels.

Lewis revealed earlier in January that their performance as a business was falling short of where they hoped to be, and to protect the future of the business they would close up to 43 unprofitable stores. More recently he revealed part of his transformation plan earlier this month, which could involve removing as much as 30% of its Head Office cost-base.

Following a £263million commercial payments scandal and a fall in sales and profits, Lewis has made the decision to empty the Cheshunt site.

No number has been determined yet but it has been said that Tesco is consulting with staff at 43 unprofitable stores, and senior sources predict that at least 2,000 jobs will disappear over time.
