
Important HR lessons have been highlighted by the shock exclusion of Brian O’Driscoll from the British & Irish Lions squad for the final test in Australia.
O’Driscoll has been widely regarded as one of the stand-out players of the tour and has proved his mettle as a top-class leader since his first selection as Irish captain in 2003. His natural leadership meant he was expected to not just start, but captain the side.
O’Driscoll said he is “totally gutted” not to be included in the squad, but Head Coach Warren Gatland can keep him onside to support the team and Captain Alun Wyn Jones.
In order for any business/team to maintain success, the engagement of key players needs to be handled sensitively if they have been denied a role that they might have expected.
Graeme Yell, Director at Hay Group says: “Be honest with the unsuccessful candidate: give constructive feedback as to why they were not selected, and why the attributes of the new leader are better aligned to the role requirements. But be optimistic too: this is a valuable opportunity to provide the candidate with additional developmental support to work towards their goals. Which projects, training, or coaching would benefit them to help them reach this next level?”
