Network Rail staff use cars for work transport, trains not cost efficient

Network Rail executives have admitted that their staff use cars for transport, because it’s cheaper than taking the train.

The transport company spent £15 million on 780,149 fuel claims in 2014, which was still £4 million less than the cost of 599,076 employee train journey claims. In addition to these costs, the company also spent £1.1million on air fares and a further £404,828 on trips made by taxis.

Network Rail has attempted to justify the hypocrisy by claiming that their workers take which ever means of transport is the least expensive.

Lilian Greenwood, Labour's Shadow Rail Minister, has expressed her disgust with the company’s dealings. In an interview with The Mirror she said: “No wonder passengers think they're getting ripped off when even rail bosses say the trains are too expensive.
