Bishop blocks gay chaplain's NHS job offer

The first British clergyman to enter in to a same-sex marriage has had a job offer from the NHS withdrawn.

Jeremy Pemberton, who married his long-term partner in April this year has been informed that his offer of employment at Sherwood Forest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been revoked because a bishop refuses to grant him the licence he requires to work.

The Acting Bishop for Southwell and Nottingham, the Right Reverend Richard Inwood, said in a statement: "[It would] not be appropriate conduct for someone in holy orders to enter into a same-sex marriage, given the need for clergy to model the Church's teaching in their lives."
