Making it happen

The last year or so has not been an easy one on the job market. Stating the obvious perhaps but most people would agree with that. However, the good jobs are still there, they always have been. So how do you get one? Don’t wait for it to happen, make it happen! 

When was the last time you thought about how you drive your car? You just get in, turn the key and off you go, don’t you? It’s all too easy to be equally as unaware about how we do our jobs and how expert we’ve become. We need to know what we offer for two main reasons. Firstly, it helps in decision making – what sort of role would suit best; what sort of organisation would be the best fit, etc. – and secondly, it’s easier to be articulate, informative and interesting about things on which we’re expert. 

Know What Is Unique About You:

Are you enthusiastic, highly motivated and a good team player? Perhaps you’re all three but the downside is, so is everyone else. They’re all “me too” attributes and so don’t differentiate you from the crowd. If you were recruiting, wouldn’t you want someone a bit special, someone who offered something unique? Whatever we do, we each have our own way of doing it - if you’re not sure (or just plain modest) ask one of your colleagues what they value about you – you may be pleasantly surprised by their reply. Identify your special contribution.
