$15,000 reimbursement | OpenAI expands benefit offering legal assistance for employees affected by ICE

OpenAI has introduced a new package of support for employees navigating interactions with ICE agents, as federal enforcement actions draw national attention and criticism.

The initiative provides assistance to staff directly affected by detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or prolonged secondary inspection by US Customs and Border Protection. Support also extends to cases involving an immediate family member.

According to a company spokesperson, the resources include reimbursement of up to $15,000 gross for approved expenses connected to immigration detention or enforcement interactions. Covered costs may include immigration legal services, meals, lodging and transportation. Employees can also access expedited referrals to external immigration counsel and a resource guide offering direction on locating detained individuals and identifying low-cost or pro bono legal support.

“We regularly review our employee benefits to ensure they reflect the needs of our workforce,” a spokesperson told Business Insider. “As part of that process, we updated our support resources for employees facing complex immigration-related situations.”
