'Vulgar, offensive, & false' | Campbell's fires senior executive accused of racist, disparaging remarks

Campbell’s cream of chicken cans

Martin Bally, an IT leader at soup manufacturer Campbell's, has left the company following the emergence of a recording in which he allegedly made offensive remarks about Indian workers and the company’s products.

The comments, which were captured during a meeting with former employee Robert Garza, reportedly included references to Campbell’s soups as being for “poor people” and allegations about the use of “bioengineered meat.” Garza, hired as a cybersecurity analyst in September 2024, filed a lawsuit last week detailing the conversation.

“The comments were vulgar, offensive, and false, and we apologize for the hurt they have caused,” Campbell’s said in a statement. “This behavior does not reflect our values and the culture of our company, and we will not tolerate that kind of language under any circumstances.”

Recording confirms alleged remarks

According to legal representatives from Runyan Law Group, who are representing Garza, the recording authenticated by Campbell’s captures Bally making several disparaging comments about Indian workers and the company’s products. The audio reportedly dates from a November 2024 meeting to discuss Garza’s salary.

Campbell’s said it first became aware of “segments” of the recording on November 20, noting that neither Garza nor his attorney had previously informed the company of the recording’s existence.

Alleged retaliation and legal claims

Garza’s lawsuit claims that after informing his manager about the offensive comments on January 10, he was not encouraged to report the matter to HR and was “abruptly terminated from employment.” The complaint alleges the actions caused Garza stress, humiliation, embarrassment, and mental anguish.

He is seeking compensation for emotional, reputational, and economic harm, as well as attorneys’ fees. Companies are at risk when workplace conduct issues are not addressed promptly and transparently, particularly regarding executives’ behavior.

The firm's statement emphasized that Bally’s departure reflects the company’s commitment to maintaining a respectful and inclusive workplace.
