Every employee wants to feel valued for their work but for one ex-pat manager years of overtime and dedication ended with a pay cut that lead to them leaving a for a better-paid gig within the same organization.
The employee, using the Reddit handle u/ForWango, shared their experience in a now-deleted post, describing long hours and commitment to their role. “I worked my ass off and worked more than 500 overtime hours last year and even covered for other people since we had high fluctuation in the company,” they wrote.
Despite praise for their performance, the worker said their pay was unexpectedly slashed when their two-year contract came up for renewal. “Out of the blue HR cut my yearly pay by 30% and said it’s due to new compliance guidelines,” the post stated. “They said I can leave if I don’t like the offer.”
Job hunt turns into HR issue
Taking the advice literally, the employee began applying for new roles. Within weeks, they secured a senior position at another subsidiary, paying twice the offered salary. “Leaving here soon,” they announced in a post.
The decision was not received favourably by his current employer. “The CEO, HQ and my manager are pissed at HR. Feels good,” the employee added.
In a follow-up, they described the fallout from their resignation. “Asked me to look for a replacement. Called HQ and they said, ‘We don’t think anyone here would like to transfer for that salary.’ So, HR would need to revert the contract for the next person,” the post said. Local colleagues reportedly refused to take the role because of its “high-stress level.”

The story struck a chord with others online. One commenter said, “Especially because the corporations win 99% of the time, so it’s nice to see a victory on our side.”
Another Reddit user wrote, “They hired three people to do most of my old job. And what was the impossible-to-meet demand I had made? One person, half the day.”
Meanwhile, another user congratulated the original poster on the outcome. “It’s always comical when someone in the higher position thinks they have the upper hand and gives an ultimatum like this, only for it not to go their way.”
