Home Depot deletes references to DEI from website

Home Depot has deleted its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policy from its public website, replacing the page with broader language focused on company culture and employee values.

The policy change, made without announcement, reflects a wider trend among major US retailers to reduce or reframe DEI commitments under political and consumer scrutiny.

Archived versions of the home improvement chain’s site show the company previously stated that maintaining a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture was both a competitive advantage and “key to our long-term success.” The statement also described DEI as integral to attracting talent, amplifying diverse ideas and strengthening local communities.

That message was first posted on 22 July 2022. It remained online until the end of March this year, when it was removed from the "Responsibility" section of the site.

From DEI to ‘Living Values’

In place of the original page, Home Depot now features a section titled “Living Values” under which sits a new page named WeAreTHD. The updated version presents a more general statement about culture and corporate identity but omits any explicit reference to diversity, equity, or inclusion.

“Our culture and our associates provide intangible and hard-to-replicate competitive advantages, which have been key to helping us navigate challenging market conditions,” the revised page reads.

A spokesperson for the company, confirmed the change in a statement to Retail Brew, saying: “We’re proud to have a culture that welcomes everyone, and we believe it helps us achieve our business goals.”

She added that WeAreTHD is a slogan “representing the welcoming culture we’ve built,” and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to its “core values and the needs of our business, empowering associates, driving innovation, and enriching our communities.”

Customer backlash and political backdrop

The policy shift has sparked criticism from some customers online, with social media users accusing Home Depot of caving to political pressure. One customer said they would “boycott” the company, while another added that the brand would receive “no money from me or mine.”

Although Home Depot has not confirmed the reason for the change, the move coincides with calls from former President Donald Trump to eliminate DEI programs across government and business.

In a recent speech, Trump pledged to “terminate every diversity, equity, and inclusion program across the entire federal government,” framing the move as part of a broader campaign to “restore fairness” in the workplace.

Walmart and Target are among other large US retailers that have also quietly removed DEI language or programs from their public platforms in recent months.
