Forbes survey reveals best employers for technology workers

A new survey by Forbes and market research firm Statista has identified the top employers for tech workers in the US, with government and business services companies surprisingly outranking traditional tech giants.

The US Department of Commerce claimed the top spot on the list of America's Best Employers For Tech Workers 2024, followed by business services provider Ibex and energy company, Chevron.

Tech industry leaders still featured prominently, with Salesforce, Google, and Microsoft placing fourth, fifth, and eighth respectively. Businessolver rounded out the top 10.

The survey, which included responses from over 25,000 tech professionals, evaluated companies on factors such as salary, professional development opportunities, workplace flexibility, and technological progressiveness.

Tech talent seek good pay, stimulating work, & stability

Despite recent layoffs in the tech sector, the survey found that many non-tech industries are attracting top talent by offering competitive packages and stimulating work environments.

Jason Pyle, president of technology recruiting firm Harvey Nash USA and Canada, noted, "Stability is becoming more and more of what's on the minds of tech workers."

Companies across various sectors, including healthcare, finance, and retail, are providing opportunities for tech professionals to make significant impacts outside traditional tech firms.

The survey defined tech workers as those in roles focused on IT functions, including software development, cybersecurity, and data project management.

Tech companies dominated the list, accounting for 18.5% of the top 200 employers. Retail and wholesale followed with 11.5%, while banking and financial services made up 8.5% of the list.

Employers like MetLife and eBay highlighted their commitment to employee growth, innovation, and making a broader impact as key factors in attracting and retaining tech talent.

As the tech job market evolves, the survey suggests that tech professionals are increasingly open to opportunities across diverse industries, seeking roles where they can apply their skills to drive meaningful change.
