The ‘performance management’ issue

In every organisation, employees will have goals to hit. Whether this is to successfully launch a new product line, learn a new work-related skill, or win over a key client, there are many goals that employees will be responsible for reaching. While these will likely differ from business to business, having goals in place, and striving to meet them, is a core part of working life. This is where performance management comes in.

According to a CIPD post, performance management “aims to monitor, maintain and improve employee performance in line with an organisation's objectives”. With an effective performance management process in place, employers can help to ensure that staff have the right skills to perform their job, receive performance-related feedback to help them improve, and also ensure that workers remain engaged. Research has pointed towards some of the benefits that can be reaped from a good approach to performance management. For example, a Betterworks survey found that employers focusing on continuous performance management outperformed their competitors at a 24% higher rate. Additionally, the same study found that when continuous performance management processes are in place, they are better at attracting and retaining talent.

This is why in this issue, we interviewed Hitachi Europe’s Deputy Managing Director & Chief HR Officer about what defines good performance management, shared insight’s from lastminute.com’s Chief of Culture about how the pandemic has impacted people performance, and caught up with our panel of experts to find out how HR can improve the performance management process. For the cover story, we sat down with Ford’s HR Director, Surinder Birdi, to find out more about the car manufacturer’s approach to performance management and why communication and motivation plays a key role. We also share insights from Primark’s Group Director of People & Culture and from the Director of People & Corporate Responsibility at Ricoh UK.

As ever, we hope you find this content useful and informative when navigating HR best practice.
