The most inclusive LGBT+ industries & regions

Healthcare and nursing, engineering and voluntary roles topped the list of most inclusive LGBT+ industries in the UK.

The research from Adzuna found that the healthcare and engineering industries, in particular, saw a notable increase in LGBT+ inclusive roles between 2018 and 2019, with those industries making a conscious effort to promote equality and diversity.

Andrew Hunter, Co-Founder of Adzuna, commented: “Discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community is still sadly alive in the UK, but the number of employers actively seeking or supporting employees from the LGBTQ+ community has increased notably, showing a welcome shift towards inclusivity and diversity in the workforce.

From our magazine

"A diverse workforce is a great opportunity for employers to find staff with a different set of experiences and perspectives, and I hope to see this trend continue to grow year on year.”

Roles in social work and administrative roles ranked in fourth and fifth position respectively.

To help the LGBT+ community feel safe and included at work, which policies should HR have in place?

Karen Thomson, Diversity & Inclusion Lead at Fujitsu, UK&I, told HR Grapevine that HR policies should reflect an organisation’s culture and empower talent.

“You need to truly understand LGBT+ experiences within your organisation to make sure your policies are creating an inclusive LGBT+ workplace.

“When looking at your policies think about the language you are using. By reviewing your policies through an LGBT+ lens you can ensure that they are relevant to LGBT+ employees. For example, would same-sex parents feel that your maternity and paternity policies include them?

"By making policies inclusive you signal to LGBT+ employees that they are an integral part of your thought process when creating policies,” she concluded.

We can only hope that the shift is genuine and embedded, rather than the bandwagon-jumping, box-ticking, marketing-led "conversion" that accompanied adoption of the sustainable "Green" agenda in the early 2000's.
Ultimately, it should be about selecting the BEST PERSON for the job, regardless of gender, race, religion, disability, age, sexuality and so on. It should not be about upping your LGBT quota to look good.

Shouldn't those figures be put as a percentage of total vacancies to have any meaning? It just looks like an industry and region headcount. It's impossible to see any useful information in those raw numbers. And what makes the advert inclusive? In what context is it shown (at the end of a long list of minority terms in a disclaimer?) and does it at all translate into a better environment for staff? There is no hint of the methodology here that would show us how to interpret this.
