BBC's Blue Peter selects one job applicant from 20,000 responses

The BBC has hired a new Blue Peter presenter after launching a nationwide search that received as many as 20,000 responses.

The Blue Peter – You Decide! programme assessed and tested thousands of applicants in order to find their latest recruit – 22 year old Lindsey Russell from Oxford. She will be the 36th presenter of the world’s longest-running children’s TV show.

The best 100 applicants were invited to the BBC’s Salford HQ for an audition, these were then whittled down to the best ten. The finalists took part in further tests, including raft-building and navigating an assault course blindfolded.

Judges Eamonn Holmes, Myleene Klass and Cel Spellman eventually chose a final three and the public then voted for Russell to win.

Cheryl Taylor, CBBC Controller, says: "Working on Blue Peter is a dream job for any aspiring presenter.” It is unsurprising then that the job received so many applications.

The show highlighted a strong need for a thorough assessment and testing process, especially with some high levels of applicants, in order to obtain the best talent.
